Is Longtake 2TB approved by Red?

Yes. Longtake 2TB has full RED Approved status.

KipperTie is part of RED’s approved third party programme. Longtake is made with the full cooperation of RED and in compliance with RED’s licensing and IP requirements. Every SSD module sold inside a Longtake 2Tb is sent to RED to be provisioned, aiding in transparency of quality and supply chain. These mags are the real deal.

How is Longtake packaged?

Longtake mags ship in a great little case.

We provide a robust and waterproof Underwater Kinetics case with foam filling.
Extra slots are provided that accept either Mini-mags or Longtake mags.
Each mag is sealed for transit in an anti-static pack after passing QC.
We have also worked to reduce shipping waste and recyclability with an all-cardboard outer package.

What’s the real capacity?

2TB is an accurate description, assuming 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes

Beyond that, there are some complexities to how hard drive capacities are stated, so read on if that interests you…
There is no confusion over bits and bytes – a bit is a single binary value of ‘1’ or ‘0’, and a byte is eight of those.

In SI units and speaking in base 10 the following is true:

KB, Kilobyte = 1,000 bytes (10^3)
MB, Megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes (10^6)
GB, Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes (10^9)
TB, Terabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (10^12)

In common computing usage, base 2 is more practical than base 10. As a result, 1024 replaces 1000 as a Kilobyte without much significant effect. However, scaling this to Terabytes results in a substantial discrepancy. This has largely been addressed across operating systems, but users are often unfamiliar with the binary unit names since the decimal units are so ubiquitous and so often abbreviated.

Properly named the units in base 2 are as follows:

KiB, Kibibyte = 1,024 bytes (2^10)
MiB, Mebibyte = 1,048,576 bytes (2^20)
GiB, Gibibyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30)
TiB, Tebibyte = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (2^40)

So, for example, the Longtake mag in a MacOS system will read as 2TB, while in the RED camera interface, it will be displayed as 1.8TiB. Both of these values are 2,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Compatibility FAQ

Which cameras are compatible with Longtake?

Longtake 2TB is compatible with all DSMC2 cameras.

Any RED DSMC2 camera will work perfectly with Longtake.
Earlier DSMC cameras with a MINI-MAG® side SSD will NOT accept the Longtake mag due to hardware limitations.

Do any accessories clash with Longtake?

We are currently not aware of any accessory incompatibilities.

Although Longtake is around 25mm (1 inch) longer than a RED MINI-MAG®, it is shaped to avoid any conflict with battery release buttons etc.
The wide section of Longtake is actually shorter than a MINI-MAG®, so weight and balance are almost identical for gimbal users.

Are there plans for other capacities?

No. Currently, we intend only to make a 2TB version.

We see no advantage in duplicating capacities of media which RED already provide.

Where can I buy Longtake?

When do you expect to ship?

We aim to provide good stock availability on this product as there are no variations or customisations.

How much is that in my currency?

We are a VAT registered limited company in the UK. Invoices are raised in advance of the supply of goods and are thus only issued in GBP (£ Sterling) according to HMRC regulations. As a result of daily fluctuations in exchange rates we cannot publish a fixed price in another currency.

Exchange rates for buyers using other currencies are set at the moment of purchase by the PayPal system. You will be able to see this, and any applicable VAT during checkout before committing to buy.

Can I buy the just the mag or storage case separately?

Each mag is partnered with its own hard case.

We know that may mean you end up with some spare cases, but it keeps things cost effective for us.
You can store regular redmags in them, or repurpose them a hundred other ways. They will not go to waste!

What is your returns policy?

For purchases from a reseller, please contact them directly in the first instance. Duplicate queries from end user and reseller can cause confusion and slow down the process.

For orders placed at KipperTie.com the following terms apply:

All returns must request an RMA number by email from longtake@kippertie.com
All dates referred to are shipment dates, not delivery or invoice dates.

Within 30 days of original shipment:
Returned unwanted Longtake mags with unbroken seals will be credited in full, less the cost of shipping.
Reusable new condition items with open seals will additionally be charged a restocking fee to cover our repeat QC process.

Beyond 30 days since original shipment:
Late non-warranty returns are subject to inspection, and proportionate refund may be given at our discretion.

Warranty is for one year against defects in workmanship and materials.

Returns under warranty: Subject to an identifiable problem being found, our standard shipping cost of £25 will be credited to cover the cost of the return. If a return appears unduly expensive, please contact us before sending, as we cannot cover excessive shipping costs or customs charges incurred due to incorrect return labelling or carriage method.

As a manufacturer we reserve the right to either repair or replace when performing warranty work.

What is your shipping policy?

We incorporate shipping costs into the price of each Longtake 2TB product.

Billing each customer a customised rate forces a reliance on automated shipping estimates which tend to cause unduly high shipping prices.

We average the value internally at ~£25 per item. If your location causes a particularly high shipping cost due to a remote or unusual location, we may contact you to talk about preferred carriage method and any additional costs involved. If this applies to you, we expect you know it already!

Shipping is always tracked, insured and declared as fairly as possible for import.

We most commonly use UPS and TNT. We can accommodate many alternative shipping requests at cost, however it is not possible to bill a third party account. Courier collection may of course be arranged, including in-person pickup from our Pinewood location by prior arrangement.

What is the data recovery policy?

Every original purchaser of a Longtake 2TB mag has access to an emergency data recovery service.

This service is provided by Ontrack.com, a company entirely separate from KipperTie Ltd.
KipperTie recommends Ontrack, and cooperates fully with them to support data recovery operations, by way of sharing information and provision of spare KipperTie manufactured components.

KipperTie authorises Ontrack to provide their standard service up to a limited value where failure of the Longtake SSD occurs. This service is for original customers only, once per SSD, based on serial number. KipperTie appoints Ontrack as the arbiter of whether a warrantable hardware failure has occurred in cases where misuse or accidental damage may be the root cause.

You are under no obligation to use Ontrack, however we recommend that if data recovery is a possible requirement you should refrain from even connecting the affected SSD until expert contact is made.

In cases of accidental deletion, over-write or damage we still fully recommend Ontrack, although KipperTie can take no responsibility for costs incurred where accidental loss of data or physical damage occurs.
